Aliki emerges from the depths of history. It is a breath-taking peninsula leading out steeply into the sea and forming two beautiful coves on the south-east coast of the island. The settlement of Aliki has a history which can be traced back, uninterrupted, to the 7th century B.C. Aliki translates literally as “the salt pans” (throughout the salt marshes), but it is world renowned for its antiquities and for the beautifully preserved demonstrations of how quarrying and shipping of the local Thasian marble was undertaken during ancient times. Thus, today one can still see huge chunks of marble which either fell or were abandoned in the sea all around this area.Today the crystal-clear waters and the serenity of the natural environment are the reasons why more and more visitors come to appreciate these beautiful small coves, with their striking natural beauty. Aliki is an organized beach with bars and taverns along the beach side. From Skala Potamia only 19km away.
Giola
They say that God has been very generous when gave Thassos its nature. One of the most beautiful natural gifts is Giola, the natural lagoon carved out of Thassos rocks over millions of years. According to the legend, Giola represents Zeus’s eye which oversaw his mistress Aphrodite, but according to another legend, Zeus created Giola for Aphrodite to bath in it. That is why Giola is also called Aphrodite’s tears. Nevertheless, you don’t want to miss the experience of swimming surrounded by rocks only few centimeters away from the rough sea. The road of 29km from Skala Potamia to Giola can offer you a half an hour joy ride along the seaside.
Marble Beach
Incredibly beautiful Marble beach is the most unique beach in Thassos and no picture can faithfully present its beauty. The light blue color of the water, the snow-white marble pebbles, and the rich pine woods all around make the beach one of a kind. Always cold marble pebbles make walking on the beach feel refreshing during high summer temperatures. From Skala Potamia 6,5km on the main road via island and 5km on the dirt road will take you to an unforgettable experience.
Monastery
The Monastery of Archangel Michael is located on the east side of the island, about 24 km from Skala Potamia. It is the biggest and the most popular monastery of Thassos and dates back to the 18th century. The interesting feature of the Monastery of Archangel Michael, which is exclusively female, is that it is built on the edge of a cliff. Therefore, it gives a spectacular view of the Aegean Sea. The nuns are highly hospitable. The Monastery of Archangel Michael insists that the visitors dress up according to their rules that are long trousers for men and long skirts and tops with covered shoulders for women.
Archaeological Museum
The first building of the Archaeological Museum of Thasos was built in 1935 next to the Ancient Agora. It was created to house the finds from the excavations held in the area during the 19th century. The museum, which has now been expanded, presents the evolution and history of the island from the Prehistoric period until the Early Christian times. It is located in Limenas (Thassos town), 12km from Skala Potamia.
